Melissa Scheve

Melissa Scheve (she/her) is originally from Kansas. As a first-generation college graduate, she became interested in education after experiencing the kindness of her middle school teachers. Now, she has spent more than thirty years in the field—first as a high school teacher, then as a teacher educator.

Melissa is passionate about closing the opportunity gaps in the American educational system. After 20 years as a high school teacher, she continued this work at the university level—first at Stanford as a teacher educator and director of the Hollyhock Fellowship, and then at Yale as a Lecturer in Education Studies.

Melissa was attracted to Yale Education Studies by the opportunity to work with aspiring teachers in EDST 205: Principles of Effective Teaching. Her favorite parts of the class are learning with and from her students, having each student teach mock lessons in class, and partnering each student with a local New Haven teacher for the semester. She hopes to encourage young people to consider the most important and rewarding career one can have—that of a teacher!
