Since 2013, the Yale Education Studies Program has supported Yale undergraduates studying the research, practice, and policy of education. Though it does not include teacher certification, many students go on to become classroom teachers after graduation. The program aims to center the expertise and knowledge of classroom teachers as central to the mentorship of future educators.
In the fall of 2023, the Yale Education Studies Program, with a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Fund, will invite several New Haven Public School teachers to share their expertise with Yale students. We encourage teachers representing diverse backgrounds, engaged in reflecting on their pedagogical practices, and interested in deepening their engagement with anti-racist teaching practices to apply for this new professional development opportunity.
Program Design
In the fall, through collaborations with Professor Daniel HoSang and his seminar, Anti-Racist Curriculum and Pedagogy, New Haven teachers will gain support in developing curricular materials around a project in anti-racist education. Students from the lecture class Foundations in Education Studies will also observe in partner-teacher classrooms to connect their theory and policy to education practice.
In the spring, with lecturer Melissa Scheve and her seminar, Principles of Effective Teaching in the Secondary Classroom, teacher-partners will mentor Yale students interested in teaching careers who will regularly observe in their classrooms and will design a lesson, on a topic assigned by the teacher, to teach in their classroom.
Partner Teachers will…
- Have ~10 Yale students observe in their classroom over the course of the year
- Mentor 1-2 Yale students interested in pursuing a career in teaching
- (Optional) Collaborate with Yale students to identify possible topics for further research and study (e.g. action research, classroom or school policy)
- (Optional) Work with Yale Education Studies faculty and students to design a public-facing professional development event in the spring
Partner Teachers will gain…
- Access to new curricular materials related to anti-racism to develop their teaching practice
- Opportunity to reflect on their practice and develop future generations of teachers
- The ability to help build a new model of professional development
New Haven public school teachers with 3+ years of experience are eligible to apply. Teachers will receive a $1,500 stipend for the year. The partnership will go from September 2023 until May 2024. We estimate the commitment will be up to 25 hours per semester, for a maximum of 50 hours for the year, including observation time.
Teachers of color, LGBTQ+ teachers, or those from other underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
