Yale’s Historical Ties to Slavery & Announcing the New Haven Teacher Residency Program

Tuesday, February 20, 2024

Dear colleagues,

On Friday, President Salovey announced the results of a newly published study of Yale and Slavery and a series of follow-up initiatives including support for a teacher residency fellowship for New Haven.

Yale Education Studies worked on the design of this fellowship in partnership with New Haven Public Schools, New Haven Promise, and Southern Connecticut State University. Together, we aim to attract, train, and retain high-quality, diverse teachers for New Haven Public Schools—100 educators over the next 5 years starting in 2025.

We are working to finalize the implementation details and will be sharing more in the coming months. In the meantime, we’re grateful to be collaborating with community and university partners to support teachers and students in New Haven.

With gratitude,

Maria Mercedes Piñango (Faculty Director of Education Studies, Professor of Linguistics and Interdepartmental Neuroscience)

Mira Debs (Executive Director of Education Studies, Sociology Lecturer)
