As she delves deeper into her Education Studies courses, she expands her interests to include the psychology of education and the history of universities as institutions. She now finds herself captivated by many aspects of the education world—a good “problem” to have.

The Intensive Education Studies Certificate allows Janae-Rose to grow beyond the classroom and gain real-world skills. For her fieldwork experience, she leads a Girl Scout troop at the local Boys and Girls Club, where she teaches the girls and manages communications with parents, other troop leaders, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Girl Scouts Council. This role helps her build strong organizational and leadership skills, while refining her classroom management style—balancing fun with structure.

The program not only provides an intellectually and professionally formative experience but also creates fun memories for Janae-Rose, like making felt ducks in EDST 261. Though she lost her duck, she still considers the experience a 10/10.

Looking ahead, Janae-Rose plans to begin her senior capstone in the fall, focusing on developing “culturally conscious methods for teaching self-advocacy to children.” Years of advice encouraging her to disregard the wisdom and values of her family background inspire this project. Now, she emphasizes the importance of teaching advocacy rooted in personal and cultural identity.

In five years, Janae-Rose envisions herself continuing to work in education. However, her recent interest in philanthropy motivates her to help fund innovative ideas shaping the future of education. For now, she enjoys making the most of the “fun and special space” that Education Studies provides, where the interdisciplinary nature and diverse perspectives of her cohort create enriching conversations and lasting memories.
